The Patriot Post has a Conservative meme (featuring an attractive white woman, of course) going around on Facebook that says this: “I think you should pay for your own mortgage, birth control, college loans, food and cell phones. This isn’t because I’m Conservative. It’s because I’m an adult.”

I have two comments about the meme:

First, I’m tired of Conservatives co-opting the word “patriot.” I would argue that Liberal causes, such as protecting the environment, supporting education, separation of church and state, helping the poor, and non-discrimination are not only patriotic, but more patriotic than Conservative causes, such as deciding who can marry who, what a woman can do with her own body, and that corporations are people.

And speaking of corporations . . . . if the Patriot Post thinks it’s “adult” to put complex issues in simplistic terms, how about adding “Corporations should pay for their own military” to their meme? After all, wars—like Bush’s fiasco in Iraq—are all too often fought for the benefit companies like Halliburton and Exxon. If it’s adult to expect poor people to pay for their own food, surely it’s adult to expect rich corporations to pay for their own wars!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
