It’s not the best, nor the worst, ad you’ll ever see but it does have the distinction of being the world’s first tv commercial for marijuana. Made for Canadian company Crop King Seeds, its theme rests on the comparison between alcohol and marijuana in society and in the marketplace.

It isn’t on the air yet but it is available on the internet, a premiere run that will give ad makers and the company a chance to gauge its effectiveness and likeability - they’ve already indicated that that they're likely to have to edit out one bit of profanity before the ad airs. Most of all, they’re hoping the ad will go viral so I thought I’d give them a helping hand.

While it’s funny and memorable, it has come in for its fair share of criticism. Some feel that the hostility shown towards the negative effects of alcohol is too heavy-handed. Others that the “spokesking” is too over the top or, as Chris Weigant puts it:
"...falls somewhere on the scale of creepy corporate mascots between Jack from the Jack In The Box ad campaign (fairly benign), and the truly disturbing plastic-faced Burger King from their ad campaign of a few years ago (totally creepy). At the very least, get a better fake beard! Having a mascot for your company who looks like Santa's weed-growing cousin isn't all that bad an idea (it's actually pretty funny!), but maybe do a better casting job for the next ad. Maybe hire an off-season mall Santa with a real snow-white beard? Just a suggestion."
It is nevertheless historic and a pioneer in its own right. It breaks down a long-held barrier, an event millions of people never expected to see, and begins the normalization of marijuana acceptance via the powerful advertising medium as more and more companies produce their own ads.

The commercial has appeared at just the right time for those states with midterm ballot propositions to legalize marijuana. Many are concerned that midterms are a bad time for such propositions because of traditionally low turn-outs in a non-presidential year. However, I’m with those who believe such propositions help to increase turn-out, especially of young voters, and I see this ground-breaking commercial as furthering that outcome by appealing to, and energizing, the “yes” voters. I hope I’m right because that outcome can only be good for Democrats.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

            Hopefully someone will drop in.

Have you seen the special that Dr. Sanja has been doing on CNN? I think it's CNN. I watched it last night. He has investigated the issues of legalizing medical marijuana. The story centers around one family whose daughter has epilepsy. The marijuana has helped her tremendously but the family had to move to Colorado to obtain what she needs. Chris Christie is up to his neck in the problem because he won't cooperate with people who desperately need it. He is a ruthless SOB. Seeing the father of the little girl confront him is gut-wrenching.

The special has been on before so I'm sure it will be available again. It is a must watch for those of us who want this   moved along.

I worked for WN and he has smoked every day since he was a young man. He is 81 and touring about 200 days a year. So much for those who talk  about it being a gateway drug. :)

but it sounds like a really interesting and worthwhile documentary. I really hope it gets a very wide audience.  There's been too much disinformation about marijuana in the media for years. It's time some home truths broke through.

I'm a bit surprised Republicans don't push this for the money alone - heaven knows, they're all about money and there's money in them there plants.

Oh, and get totally cranky when you suggest they aren't paying their share of taxes and wax long and peotic about how they pay sales tax and gas tax and many of them, yeah right phony up a claim to justify their  purchases and ownerships of register, than pay taxes on that 'claim'.

to 'upscale' the company, and blew up the clown as a symbol of how much more serious they were.  It didn't work, of course, and JitB took its place at the bottom of the heap, having no real identity.

When they brought the clown back, it was as a sort of corporate persona, which lacked the fun of the original.  They have since tried to get a little bit silly, as witness the commercials with a stoner out with the munchies, trying to get a lot of 'tacos'* for very little cash, but so far have been helped more by the ineptitude of the competition than anything else.

(*tacos only by default, as they bear little resemblance to any real food)

Even in legal states, you get into things like customs when bringing it into the country and prosecution becomes a grey issue at best because you go from state laws to federal, which sucks.

I could be completely wrong but the potential for having feds at my door puts me off. But if it's ever unscheduled federally, I'd love to do business with them. I see several i like and a few i've had--blueberry, hash plant, white widow and super silver haze were all very good. For now, I recommend sticking with local options.

          Recommended by:
          Mopshell

I thought the ad served a dual purpose--to try and point out that pot isn't really a big deal and the fact that it's definitely far less harmful on your body than alcohol. This is the part I believe was targeted at the USA because I'm sure they'd love to legally sell to people here as much as some of us would love to buy.

When the Santa-looking weed dude shows up, they're trying to sell their products and that part is targeted at Canada. I checked out their website and head shops sell their seeds all over Canada and they indicate that they're expanding into the UK soon so they're actually quite a large outfit.

Unfortunately, it's doubtful that they'll air this commercial in the USA, even if it's cleaned up and even in states like CO and WA. It's likely the DEA would get the FCC force any station who would dare to air it to cease because they'd be advertising a product that's federally illegal on federal airwaves (I could be wrong but it's what I imagine playing out).

Plus, you'd have the issue that other neighboring states often pick up each other's TV/radio signals and at least in Colorado, the bordering states are extremely conservative with very hard-ass drug laws. Their legislators would be bounded to raise a ruckus about pot ads on TV on airwaves that crosses into their state. This is especially true if, God forbid, someone's little Timmy happened to see it at night between ads for hard-on treatments and 18 y/o girls flashing their cleavage in those 1-900 number commercials.

Sorry if my post was too long. I'm passionate about this topic and sometimes it gets away from me.

          Cheers!

          •  Your post was NOT too long! (0+ / 0-)

Every word of it was worth reading! And DK is exactly the platform for those who are passionate on this topic so you go for it!

I'm glad you checked up on their site because that info is very interesting. I admit that I didn't give nearly enough attention to it.

As for airing the ad on US media, it's something of an irony from my point of view. Here we have the populace espousing no censorship of anything on media because the First Amendment says governments can't abridge free speech. What is it but censorship if an ad is removed? Especially if it plays on WA and CO tv. So what if the tight-arse Repubs in neighboring states don't like it - free speech, man!

I would LOVE a case like this to go to court - free publicity and a national audience!

You're diary was excellent, very informative and interesting to read. Thanks for writing it and thanks for your kindness. I hope you write more.

In America, our government is NUTS when it comes to pot because so much of our law enforcement depends on the money they get from the stat boost they get from making drug arrest. As you well know, way more people smoke marijuana than use harmful drugs like meth, coke or heroin. Legalize marijuana and the "epidemic scourge" of drugs isn't that bad. Yet these people use every tool they can to try to keep their gravy train rolling longer, while ruining countless lives in the process, so they can have more jobs and bigger budgets.

In Colorado, they put "legalized" pot businesses in a bind where financial institutions won't do business with them because of the potential federal risk AND because so many of them are cash businesses they get hit by an extra fee by the IRS. The reason I'm mentioning this is to show just how unfair the American government is when it comes to this issue.

And given some of our more recent SCOTUS rulings, I wouldn't be surprised if they rendered the most blatant ideologically unfair ruling you could imagine. I love my country but sometimes the people who run it can make it so depressing--especially the ridiculous lengths they'll go to protect the status quo.

              Peace!

When I was a young'un, there were maybe three or four roughly descriptive names for pot, mostly just the names of the countries of origin.  "Strong pot" meant five tokes to get high.

Now the stuff is so much stronger, that just walking into a room where people are toking causes a buzz.  And the names for it sound like something out of a weird science fiction future where everything people eat, drink, or smoke, is produced by gene-splicing and hydroponics tended by robots.

We got the future back. Uh-oh.

Grape Ape = strong grape taste
          Blueberry = sweet blueberry flavor/odor
Strawberry Cough = strawberry taste with a slight skunky flavor

Then you have strains that are named that because of their appearance.
          - Black Bubba (no racial slur intended, it's an actual strain with a dark color, a hybrid of Bubba Kush).
          - Ice, which if grown right is so dense with thc crystals that it looks like a glaze. White Widow is also that way.

Then you have hybrid strains that have name combos
Skywalker OG = Skywalker + OG Kush
Super Lemon Haze = Super Silver Haze + Lemon Skunk

I love reading and experimenting with new strains--it's become one of my favorite pastimes. Check out Leafly, if you haven't and love to learn about strains. One thing about pot today is it's a whole lot stronger but you smoke WAY less of it to get a decent buzz. In that way it's cheaper too because although it costs more, it lasts longer.
