It is 2:42 PM here and it's 110 degrees with 17% humidity. This has been the hottest summer I've experienced here. Normally we get about 10 days of 100+ heat. This year it's been weeks. A cooling trend is predicted with high temps down into the low 90's while we are away in Detroit. But I don't trust that for a moment since they've also been consistently wrong in predicting the high temps for weeks now as well. Today was supposed to top out at 101, so they are at least 9 degrees off. It typically will get warmer as the afternoon moves along still.
We have a mature garden. We've been at it for 24 years. This year we are having to let a lot of it die which really saddens me. Instead of watering it every three days for 45 minutes, I am watering it once a week for 30 minutes. This isn't enough for a number of plants. For some of the bigger plants I'm doing a bit of spot watering...just enough to hopefully keep them alive until our promised El Niño weather pattern which should give us some decent rain this winter.
BTW, I've written about this situation in comments and as a KTK diary last week. I offended someone from southern California who felt like I was lumping all SoCal folks together. I do want to publicly apologize to that person. The only statistics I have are about what is going on aggregately by various regions in California. Of course everyone is an individual and acts accordingly. What I wrote is true, but again I apologize for offending any individual who may be doing their part.

Today I'm scrambling to get it together to travel to NetRoots Nation in Detroit. So I don't have time to be involved with tonight's KTK as I should. I also don't have any real topic. Last week I was emailing Thinking Fella. He lives outside Durango, Colorado which is simply beautiful. He sends me pics of his hikes just to make me jealous. It works. I told him I didn't have a topic for my CUA diary later in the week. He sent me 10 ideas...just like that. The man is The Dude. So I'll ask one of his questions.
What drink do you gravitate to when it's really hot?
Smileycreek calls anything over 105 "one hundred and fuck." Well it's officially one hundred and fuck here. I like cold beer. One reason is beer is mostly water, so they do hydrate you as well as refresh. Hard liquor requires a water back after every drink so you don't get yourself in trouble.
As you know there are two kinds of beers = Lager and Ale. Lagers are lighter beers. Ales can be all over the map from light wheat beers to heavy, rich very bitter beer. I definitely gravitate towards ice-cold lagers on hot summer days. Some of the lighter ales are OK too when it's hot. Generally ales are for drinking in winter for me. Another thing is many robust ales leave me feeling bloated while lagers never do.
These are the beers I've been drinking this summer for the most part. Fat Tire is actually a mild ale. 1554 is dark, but it's actually a very light ale as well. The other two are lagers.
