In response to the Senate Democrats'
legislation to overturn the Supreme Court's
Hobby Lobby decision allowing certain employers to dictate what healthcare options their female employee's can use, Republicans are offering up their own bill.
That does nothing.
In response to a proposal by Senate Democrats to require for-profit employers to cover birth control in their health plans, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that Senate Republicans plan to offer their own bill requiring employers to allow women to buy their own birth control.
"We plan to introduce legislation this week that says no employer can block any employee from legal access to her FDA-approved contraceptives," McConnell told reporters. "There's no disagreement on that fundamental point."
Which is precisely how it works now. A woman can purchase whatever FDA-approved birth control she chooses to use, as long as she can afford it, without her employers' permission. It's true that there is no disagreement on that fundamental point. It's also pretty much pointless, as usual for Republicans.
The problem with Hobby Lobby is that certain employers can tell certain employees—the ones with lady parts—that certain kinds of birth control that are perfectly safe and legal are off limits under their insurance plans. Based on nothing but the stuff that they've completely made up about how babies are made.
We're very glad that Senate Republicans are so generous in allowing us to do what we like with our slut pill money. But as with everything that has anything to do with lady parts, they're missing the boat. No surprise there. Republicans just don't see any problem for women in this decision. Just like they don't see any problems for women, anywhere.
