A new Telegraph headline based on the results of a UK government survey on electricity use and environmental concerns states that "People who claim to worry about climate change use more electricity." As you'd expect, deniers and conservative politicians are reveling in the "hypocrisy of many who claim to be 'green.'"
However, what the study actually finds is that older consumers are less concerned about future climate impacts, which is understandable in a self-interested way since many climate impacts will be outside the lifetimes of currently elderly people. Older consumers also tend to use less energy, not because of environmentalism but because their needs are fewer.
The Telegraph chose to ignore that age largely accounted for the observed results in order to shoehorn a narrative of hypocrisy into the story.
