Extant is a new series on NBC.
If you are into science fiction, I would give it a try.
So far I would give it a very preliminary grade of B, with an interesting premise and lots of room for interesting plot development.
Pet peeve below the fold.
As with all science fiction, the viewer needs to suspends some disbelief to buy into the premise. That having been said I have a problem with one specific plot point, which apparently they think was necessary to set up the initial situation.
Set in the future, a corporation runs at least one large space research station.
(There may be several.) A single astronaut mans the station for a tour of 13 months!
I am willing to believe that the station is sufficiently automated, so that one human can handle what needs to be done. So the corporation would save some money by having only one human; the station would only have to provide life support for one human.
However, there are very, very few people who have the psychological makeup to be isolated for 13 months. Yes they would have video contact with earth, but it is not the same thing. They would be very likely to develop serious mental problems.
In addition, why have that tremendous stress on the personal life of the astronauts by having them out there for 13 months at a time.
I could believe 1 or 2 month tours, assuming the trip to the station is at most a few days each way. However, I do not see 13 month tours as reasonable, especially solo missions.
