CBS News graphic via Twitter showing flight path of Malaysia Airlines MH17 over Ukraine
There is still no official word on what caused the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur over Ukraine near the Ukraine-Russia border. Ukraine's president says his country's military played no role in the downing, and while not affirmatively concluding that the plane was shot down, made clear that he believes the plane was brought down: "We are confident that those responsible for the given tragedy will be brought to justice."

The plane disappeared from radar over a region of Ukraine at the center of ongoing Ukraine-Russia tensions:

Eastern Ukraine has been roiled for months by a violent pro-Russian separatist uprising in which a number of military aircraft have been downed. But this would be the first commercial airline disaster resulting from the hostilities in Ukraine.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki refused to speculate on whether the U.S. was concerned that the Russian military had supplied the sort of missiles that could bring down a passenger jet flying at cruising altitude to separatists. She also said she was aware of media reports indicating 23 American citizens were on board the flight, but said she could not confirm that information.

11:10 AM PT: President Obama is delivering a speech now in Delaware including comments on the flight:

11:12 AM PT: The president's remarks are brief and circumspect: "It looks like it may be a terrible tragedy. [...] Working to determine whether there were American citizens aboard." Adds that the U.S. will assist in any way possible to determine what happened.

11:13 AM PT: MSNBC focusing on the fact that the president's offer of assistance was to Ukraine in particular and not to other countries, but given that the plane went down in Ukraine, that seems like exactly what you'd expect.

11:15 AM PT: This is supposedly video of the plane falling from the sky and exploding when it hits the ground, taken from long-range:

11:26 AM PT: Interesting nugget from AP:

An Associated Press reporter on Thursday saw seven rebel-owned tanks parked at a gas station outside the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne. In the town, he also observed a Buk missile system, which can fire missiles up to an altitude of 22,000 meters (72,000 feet).

11:43 AM PT: A gruesome report from the scene where the plane crashed.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
