More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.

  •  Hi Man Oh Man. (6+ / 0-)

We just finished two days of loading two moving trucks for our move from Mass to Florida.

So for the first time I can remember in a very long time we are without TV.

An eerie creepy silence pervades large empty rooms as I sit on a single matress - the only remaining item in the house other than our suitcases 3 cats, their food and water, and litter boxes.

Only now does my blunder become apparent as we can even hear crickets we never before knew surrounded us in such vast numbers as to evoke images of that Twilight Zone episode in which a family was eaten alive by millions of cockroaches.

If only I had made a recording of some background TV on my Iphone I could replace this dreary silence with noises of modern civilizations to comfort us in this time of confusion.

I live on the edge  of a small town. A couple hundred yards west of here is a little creek and its flood plain is now planted with soybeans. At night, I sit out in my carport and listen to the night birds and toads/frogs and crickets and coyotes.

      From lonerwolf

One of our greatest fears is silence.  We run from it: in our lounge-rooms, in our cars, in our workplaces, in our conversations.  In every place you will notice our habit of drowning out the dreaded silence with noise and stimulation.  It’s like the grim, or a dark omen that follows us around eternally.  Many of us don’t realize it.  Many of us live under a veil of oblivion, not realizing how afraid we are to be in silence and stillness with ourselves.  We will turn up our stereos.  We’ll turn on our iPod’s or phones.  We’ll turn on the radio or the TV.  We will find anything to fill that void of emptiness.  And constantly, we’ll pollute ourselves with noise and stimulants, that numb our minds so that we live our worlds in a thoughtless dream-like state.

      •  I don't mind coyotes. (5+ / 0-)

I feel sorry for them, because they're kinda sad and lonely looking critters. However, some coyotes live pretty nearby. They live along the Willamette just a mile or so away as the crow flies, and some of the wetlands of the creeks contributing to the Willamette, which are close to established neighborhoods. The coyotes have found a dandy food source in these neighborhoods. Cats. Feral and pets, they taste the same to those coyotes. We lose a lot of them each year. I dread losing one of my two cats and try my best to keep them in at night, but my young male has other ideas.

Regardless, I love to sit outside at night. I have tree frogs and some slightly larger kind that love to croak at night. And two birch trees that rustle a bit.

Re: Humor Alert. Are you, or are you not moving from the fine state of Massachusetts to the well, state of Florida? If so, what prompted the move? And amazing how quiet quiet can be. I like crickets. They remind you you're not literally alone.

Let Big Mama serenade you by name.

spoof not as poetically expressed as Man Oh Man's lonerwolf passage.

Yes, for real we are moving from Mass to FL, and will drive our cats down starting tomorrow or the next day.

Our children are off to college, and we want some new zest in our life where the winters are not as bleak, and the housing stock not so expensive.

California is my birth state and I want to end up back there.

G is one of the most headstrong women I've ever met read about in real life or fiction. Once she makes up her mind what she wants to do next nothing can persuade her otherwise.

Florida is beautiful in the winter but so scorching hot in the summer I suspect I'll have a better chance praising California after a year or two.

Thanks for much for big Mama, I'd never heard this before.
