The Ukraine crisis is becoming the West's last stand in defence of it's post cold war dominance.

So Putin is doubling down on his Ukraine position. Imposing sanctions on European food imports will cause significant price rises for Russian shoppers who get a large portion of their meat and vegetables from the EU.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

leaves it a vassal of China.

For all of his constant chest-pounding and show of machismo, Putin's game of chess is weak, because he has no valid long-term strategy. He allowed his own gambits and tactical moves to spiral his position out of control. Moreover, through his constant aggression and lack of ability to negotiate and compromise with the West, he's not doing the Russian people any favors.

The US media says that it is because of the propaganda machine at work.  The whole incident, especially the reporting of the incident, has been causing me to question how much the propaganda machine has been going here too.

screwed the American People with two unnecessary wars, Putin is screwing his own people with the Ukraine conflict.

The U.S. and EU should supply night goggles and flack jackets, but no weaponry. Ukraine can take care of itself.

how completely the Russian and Chinese cant that the West is a bunch of spent, decaying, decadent has-beens has gone silent in the past three or four months.

Putin's only plan in eastern Ukraine was a Crimea type infiltration, insurrection, and authority imposition.  When the expected conservative majority for secession and annexation into Russia didn't materialize during May and June, the game was politically lost.

I think Putin and his advisors looked around and decided that they were truly out of space.  Other than Ukraine, only miserable and minor Belarus remains between Russia and the EU.  Russian public opinion, agitated and to some extent focussed by propaganda, wants some historical scores and symbolic matters disputed with The West and with Ukrainians.  And of course there is the Russian nationalist-imperial project, which is badly damaged by Ukrainians breaking away.  Whether out of domestic political practicality, tribal feelings, wounded pride, resentment, spite, or sunk investment fallacy, Putin and his government have made a military stand in Donetsk and Luhansk.  It has worn down to an emotional matter; all the rational aims are no longer realistic or no longer relevant.

China has watched the game closely, of course.  It doesn't mind being an indirect beneficiary, at all, but it doesn't want Putin broken by defeat either.

If Putin is rewarded for his aggressive behavior towards neighboring countries, expect the Chinese government to be pressured by its people to do the same.

Putin thinks the West is soft. Typical Stalin wannabe bully.

The President needs to make it clear we will not tolerate what it is he has for long term plans. He and his hard liners have forgotten, the American people would have and still will fight to the death to stop them. Make sure there is no doubt, our resolve to stop Putin as was the case with his earlier predecessors, remains steadfast.

On top of the Russian cut-off, "the current volume of gas imports from Europe is much lower than we expected" and has still had not recovered so far this month, an industry source said.

Ukraine's Energy Minister Yuri Prodan last month blamed Russia's Gazprom of obstructing Ukrainian imports from European countries.
