Monday! Inspired by loggersbrat's diary, a diary about one of my more unusual cookbooks =)
As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care!
IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news!
Ok, we do have a diary schedule. But, when you are ready to write that diary, either post in thread or send FloridaSNMOM a Kosmail with the date. If you need someone to fill in, ditto. FloridaSNMOM is here on and off through the day usually from around 9:30 or 10 am eastern to around 11 pm eastern.

I freely admit that I bought this one for the title =) And the chapter headings. And the writing. The recipes, not so much, although some are VERY good. Except the "Revenge" recipes. In those days, I lived in Boston and did as much of my shopping as possible at Quincy Market on Saturdays, right before they closed at 6 pm. That's when the fishmongers and butchers knocked the prices WAY down. But for pure entertainment value, this cookbook is FUN. It was published in 1985, when I was young, single, and frequently broke. I'm sure that I bought it that year :)
From the Introduction:
Also, you'll notice when I refer to seduction dishes I refer to seducing him/her or both because, let's face it: it's a brand new day, and if you can't comprehend people seducing more than one person at a time, you obviously do not need to be reading this cookbook. 'Cause this cookbook is written for the girl (figuratively speaking, of course) who realizes a girl has got to do what a girl has got to do, and a woman must do the rest, honey.
Irresistible :)
And with a Table of Contents like this:
Introduction
Seduction Dishes for bringing home that man that's gonna pay the rent.
Motive Dishes for that day when the rent is due, and he must pay it.
Destitution Dishes for that day when the rent is overdue and he did not pay it.
Revenge Dishes for that the day you find out the real reason he did not pay the rent
And then there's an Appendix, Shopping Tips, etc.
From the Seduction introduction:
Be careful with these things. These dishes are not to be made unless you mean serious business, 'cause honey, the seduction recipes will make a man tattoo welcome on his chest, crawl up to your bed, and say "I know I don't make enough money to deserve you but I can lick my weight in trading stamps!"
Here's a sample recipe:
CONQUISTADORESS
Honey, this is a "Nuptials On My Mind" recipe
22 ounces of condensed tomato soup
11 ounces condensed consommé
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp grated shallots
1 tsp grated celery
1/2 cup sherry
2 tbs chopped parsley
4 tbs each of sour cream, chives, and paprika
Start out by stirring the tomato soup and the consommé together with one cup of the sour cream and the sherry in a tasteful saucepan. Make sure you get those girls smooth. Then add the shallots, the celery, and the parsley. Heat until they simmer. Then top each individual bowl with a teaspoon full of sour cream, some chives and paprika for a garnish. It will lay a man out, sister.
Another recipe, called "Rapture " has this description:
This recipe will make a man walk through a forest fire, on a wooden leg, carrying a backpack full of motor oil to get to you
It's fried rabbit :)
"Motive" recipes are for when you need a job, a raise, or a part.
Motive dishes are for those cozy little meals when your boss, or some prospective director/producer has got you sitting at the table lying to him--talking about how good he looks in his new toupee, 'cause you know the rent is due and he must pay it. Not to mention that the gas man showed up pounding at your door earlier that same day, with a wrench in his hand, talkin' about turning off your gas, and you got a pound of bacon in the refrigerator that you know you cannot fry in a crockpot.
This sounds delicious, but I think I'll use baby Dutch potatoes and parboil them, instead of canned potatoes. Baby Dutch may not have existed in 1985.
JILL
To quote your average Jill, "Golly, wow! Jeepers, it's good!"
4 tbs butter
2 pounds canned whole honky white potatoes
1 dash cayenne pepper
Paprika
Melt the butter in the skillet. Drain the potatoes and put them in and sauté. Sprinkle lightly with cayenne and generously with paprika, then call Merrill Lynch.
The "Destitution" recipes are heavy on greens, vegetables and inexpensive meat.
The "Revenge" recipes are simply revolting =)
It's a VERY non-PC book :) There were quite a few descriptions (and pictures!) that I could NOT mention! And a lot of the recipes involve large amounts of bacon fat. Ahhhh, the good old days. My mother kept a coffee can full of bacon fat in the freezer. She'd use it for cooking Brussels sprouts in the cast-iron pan, among other things. Ooh, those sprouts were GOOD. It's a James Beard recipe.
I think I'll make the soup when the weather gets cooler. Yum.
Happy Monday!
Sun Aug 10, 2014 at 11:10 PM PT: It's still available on Amazon. Looks like a later edition. The prices for "New" are ridiculous. Used ones much more reasonable. http://www.amazon.com/...
