A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Will You Join Us to Save Net Neutrality?
Meteor Blades and I have been working closely with Rachel Colyer and the Daily Kos ACTION team on the upcoming opportunity we have regarding saving net neutrality. Rachel recently sent out the email below to four states (CA, CO, PA, OR) in an effort to test the capacity of our community's response. As of four days ago we've had almost 200 Kossacks sign up to visit their Senator. 80 for Feinstein, 40 for Casey, 35 for Bennett and 42 for Merkley and Wyden. I suspect the tally has increased since then. Rachel has been able to set up one meeting so far with Dianne Feinstein which is in place below in our event line-up. Requests for meetings with the other Senators are in process and CUA will keep you all apprised of the progress. I'll be contacting the leaders of the various groups in the key cities of those four states to help organize the various in-district meetings.
Please read the email and response copy below. Please click the provided links to RSVP to attend a meeting if you live in CA, CO, PA or OR. If you live in another state please visit Free Press or Demand Progress that have actions, also.
I'll follow up with results and photos of the meetings when provided. I'm pleased to illustrate this effort by Daily Kos and its community members. I hope you'll join us.
The Daily Kos community has been essential in the fight to save net neutrality. With more than one million actions taken—most of which are direct emails to the Federal Communications Commission, President Obama, and Congress—we are leading the push to encourage public comment. We are working in tight coalition with many partners on this and coordinating multiple strategies. This coordinated organizing is our best hope to stop Big Telecom.
Now, we are asking the Daily Kos community to do more. We are asking readers to help the coalition visit all 53 Democratic Senate offices over the August recess. Our partners at Free Press and Demand Progress are carrying the bulk of this work, with Daily Kos filling in the gaps in some key states. You live in one of those states. And we are hoping you can help us visit your Senator in August to talk about the importance of net neutrality for the future of communication, innovation, and grassroots voices, like Daily Kos.
I know this is a big ask. We are going to make this as easy for you as possible by providing materials, training, and other support to empower you to bring the voice of the online community to your Senator. Will you commit to visit your Senate office, with our support? Once we have volunteers, we will work to secure the meeting at an optimal time.
Why the Senate? 1. The FCC commissioners are influenced by the opinion of elected officials. 2. Majority Leader Harry Reid has stated that the Senate will counter efforts made by House Republicans to attack net neutrality, as outlined in his recent letter to the netroots community.
Why net neutrality? The idea that all data should be treated equally is a founding principle of the internet. Under net neutrality, the level, open playing field allowed the internet to blossom into an engine of democracy, communication, information, and innovation. In the absence of net neutrality, sites like Daily Kos and the entire netroots community may never have come to exist.
We cannot let our Telecom providers tell us where we can go on the internet and at what speed so they can pocket extra profit. We must fight to keep the internet free and open. And let’s be honest—we are fighting against corporate lobbyists that outnumber the public interest lobbyists, have more money, and have an insider track because FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is a former lobbyist. Because of the power of our competitors, the public must overwhelming come out to support net neutrality and we must take this fight to all the halls of power.
Would you be willing to personally attend a meeting with your Senator or a member of their staff to say why net neutrality is important to you, democracy, and the future of open communications?
|
[After you've RSVP'd] Over the next few days, please keep an eye out for information about an upcoming phone call to lay out the plans and talk about timing. We will work with the volunteers and office staff to set up a meeting in the district office closest to you. Then, we will hold a training call where we work with folks on what to expect, how to craft a message, and what questions to ask.
Our goal is to give you all the support you need in order to have a positive meeting and make the biggest impact to save net neutrality while fighting Big Telecom.

by susans ♥ for Los Angeles Kossacks
More than 30 Kossacks from Southern California met in Los Angeles to strategize on organizing. California is going to be our first roll-out of organizing an entire state. navajo talked about the importance of having a group in each congressional district and how important it is for everyone in attendance to help by looking for potential members in the comments of each diary at Dkos. navajo also talked about using the latest tools available from HQ such as Chris Bower's Action Team's email list and Faith Gardner and Jen Hayden's facebook interface to send invites to potential members in So Cal to join in. navajo will coordinate this. Google groups for email list servs were recommended along with facebook pages set up for each district as an organizing strategy.
Meteor Blades, a precinct captain for more than two decades, reinforced the effectiveness of old-fashioned, low-budget, face-to-face, boots on the ground local organizing as a time honored way to make things happen.
Vyan spoke about how politics is personal and one has to take on that mantle to engage and influence others.

After attending the 8/9 L.A. Kossacks meetup in Los Angeles, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to navajo, Meteor Blades, Vyan, susans, Shockwave, and everyone else who played a part in making the meetup a success. I am excited to be a small part of efforts to build Kossack groups in greater Los Angeles, and in all 435 congressional districts.
[...] If we vote, we win. Sometimes asking is all it takes.
[...] but don't forget there is also a lot of other electoral territory in SoCal where your help might mean the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.

65 Kossacks gathered at the home of Vetwife on August 9th to listen to four candidates in person and three other candidates skyped in. They each were allowed to speak for 10 minutes and then had five minutes to answer questions. Reverend Robert of NAACP AME Moral Mondays spoke along with veteran advocates, medical MJ leaders and an Occupier organizer. Gordon20024 deserves another Kossack Hero award for supplying ALL the food! Vetwife reports that several campaigns have been in touch with her for support since this meet-up.

Asheville's second Mountain Moral Monday protest was [Monday, August 4th] and it was inspiring to say the least. The Reverend Barber delivered a beauty of a speech that kept most people on their feet the whole time. Kossacks from far and wide met up for the event with a few of us meeting ahead of time and a few of us meeting at the rally.

by Mother Mags ♥ for Phoenix Kossacks and Baja Arizona Kossacks
Kossacks attended the meet-up from around the state, helped out by strong recruitment from Azazello and other Baja Arizona friends south of the Gila River.
[...] A week before the meet-up fewer than 20 people had registered, and we anticipated a big table where we could discuss specific races and issues in our communities. Then something happened, and the RSVPs more than doubled in a week. Thanks, Markos, for the recruitment tool!
navajo: "I had a great time attending this meet-up. I chatted with almost everyone individually and then spoke to the whole group about what Daily Kos can do for them in terms of organizing and helping their ranks grow. Not one person wanted to rehash the online dispute. Everyone wanted to move forward. What a great group! The evening was extremely enjoyable and I look forward to working with Arizona Kossacks on ACTION items in their state going forward."
