The latest 24 hour extension of the cease fire in Gaza collapsed when some rockets were fired from militants in Gaza with Israel responding by resuming bombing.
Watch live: Israel strikes Gaza after rockets fired from Strip
Large plumes of black smoke could be seen rising above the Gaza skyline on Tuesday, after the Israeli military said it had carried out a series of air strikes across the Gaza Strip in response to renewed rocket fire.
There was no immediate word on casualties from the strikes.
Authorities said the rockets landed in open areas and caused no injuries.
The two sides had reached an impasse in their negotiations. The Israeli side insisting the Gaza be demilitarized. Hamas is insisting on the Israeli blockade being lifted while rejecting proposals to disarm. Both sides are wary of the other. Until the end of June Hamas had held fire with its rockets for 19 months, but during that time small militant groups not under Hamas' control did launch some rockets into Israel despite Hamas' attempts to stop them. Israel Blames Hamas for those attacks.
Since the start of the recent hostilities only one Israeli has been killed by the thousands of rockets launched from Gaza. That is mostly due to Israelis using basic Civil Defense measures and taking shelter, an option not available to Gazans of whom over 2,000 have been killed in the IDF's ferocious assault on residential areas of Gaza. And the rockets are wildly inaccurate usually landing in open areas with little damage. There is also the Israelis Iron Dome system which has intercepted a number of the rockets, but its effectiveness has been questioned by critics.
Hamas fires rockets for first time since 2012, Israeli officials say
BY AVI ISSACHAROFF June 30, 2014,
While Israel has maintained it holds Hamas responsible for all rocket attacks, officials have said that smaller groups, such as Islamic Jihad, are usually behind the rocket attacks, while Hamas squads generally attempt to thwart the rocket fire.
Hamas and Gazans are wary of Israeli promises to ease the blockade. In 2011 and again in 2012 at part of the truce agreement Israel made commitments to ease the blockade. Commitments the Israelis never lived up to deliberately keeping the economy in Gaza in a state of paralysis. Israel claims its necessary for Israel's security but at the same time the Israel effectively bans exports from Gaza that pose no security threats to Israel.
Israel-Gaza conflict: ‘Israel must stop punishing Gaza’s people,’ pleads UN commissioner
By DONALD MACINTYRE
Mr Krähenbühl said from UNRWA's perspective the blockade was illegal "under international humanitarian law".
On the most immediate issue – the ban on importing construction materials, he said it was "socially untenable" for people not to be able to rebuild their shattered homes. He said he recognised Israel's legitimate security concerns, but added that the blockade "amounts in many ways to a form of collective punishment".
When farmers in Gaza tried to export produce to foreign markets the Israelis used bureaucratic delaying tactics to make sure the trucks filled with produce from Gaza sat at the border crossing into Israel until the produce rotted.
It will be difficult getting beyond this impasse since both sides central demands enjoy wide popular support among Israelis and Gazans.
UPDATE: A US spokesman is predictably blaming Hamas for the renewed hostilities.
