  • "Tonight, voters in Arizona, Florida, and Oklahoma head to the polls in our penultimate primary night of the year. Arizona will have a host of contests to watch: We have a nasty open Republican gubernatorial primary, a race in a safely blue Phoenix seat, and a contest between three very flawed Republicans to take on Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in a light red seat. Polls close in most of Florida at 7 PM ET (which is when we will start live-blogging), in Oklahoma at 8 PM ET, and in Arizona at 10 PM ET. • No excuse for lack of diversity in green movement:
Roughly 50 environmentalists of various racial backgrounds — African American, Native American, Latina, and Caribbean — gathered at the National Press Club yesterday with a message for mainstream green institutions: If you are serious about diversity, then put your money where your mouth is or suffer the consequences later.

The newly launched Diverse Environmental Leaders National Speakers Bureau, or “DEL,” convened yesterday on the 98th birthday of the National Park Service to convey chiefly two things: That environmentalists of color are plentiful and available as employees and leaders, and that environmental groups and government agencies have no legitimate excuses for having predominantly white workforces.

  • After suspension for bullying, Richie Incognito is back in the game:
Incognito is a free agent and is set to meet with several NFL teams. The offensive lineman huddled with Tampa Bay on Monday.

Incognito was suspended by the Dolphins in November after Jonathan Martin abruptly left the team, saying he was bullied by him.

His attorney David Cornell called it "harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing."

  • Durable goods, consumer confidence soar: Durable goods sales, a much-watched measure of economic health, rose a phenomenal 22.6 percent in July, following a revised 2.7 percent increase in June. It was the biggest gain ever. There is a caveat, however. The increase was boosted by aircraft orders. Outside the transportation sector, durable goods purchases fell 0.8 percent. Meanwhile, consumer confidence rose 2.1 points to 92.4, with a 6.7 point increase in the "present situation" component to 94.6. Far more consumers are saying jobs are now plentiful, at 18.2 percent vs July's 15.6 percent.

  • We've already have had five major Eastern Pacific hurricanes in a season that has three months to go:
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, the average Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through the end of November, and sees 15.4 total named storms, including 8.4 hurricanes, and 3.9 major hurricanes (Category 3 and greater). This year, by contrast, has already seen 13 storms, including 8 hurricanes, and 5 major hurricanes! And there are still fully 3 months to go.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

After making us suffer through 8 years of W, a president who very well may have been sociopathic- I mean he did make fun of a woman who was being executed - they want to ask if OBAMA is a sociopath?
Best case scenario for them- they are so dumb they think being a sociopath has something to do with socialism

and the news is not good.

The 127-page document includes a 32-page summary and is filled with language highlighting the dangers from rising temperatures. Those include damage to crop production, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and more pervasive heatwaves. The report mentions the word “risk” more than 350 times; “vulnerable” or “vulnerability” are written 61 times; and “irreversible” comes up 48 times.

I have no illusions that he has learned anything, as he seems to be making noises that his problem was more of a PR problem about race than anything else (although he hasn't opened his pie hole a lot), but he still should have a chance to earn a living.

I also feel that any team he's on will give him only a very short leash. Any return to the same behavior, his new employers will not repeat the mistakes of the dolphins, but let him go right away. I hope they inform him of that fact.

foreign policy, there's this interesting essay:

The paradox of living in a world in which we have achieved most of our big foreign policy goals is that the lesser ones that remain seem more difficult to obtain. But that is exactly what we should expect, precisely because these are lesser goals — and because we have reached the point at which frustrating them matters more to someone else than achieving them means to us.
As if those who criticize Obama from the right are at all interested in this kind of perspective.

  •  What are the Dems running on? (1+ / 0-)

    historys mysteries

It's the end of August and I really couldn't even make a good guess as to what Dems would do if they received a majority in Congress.

Every district and state has its own issues but we also have to have some good reasons to get out and vote. Please, Dem candidates for House and Senate, have a short agenda of what to get done with a majority.

I would suggest: reform corporate income tax; get rid of double taxation on income (income tax includes FICA earnings as taxable - keep it simple, though, just say double taxation); rebalancing tax policy to reward work and reduce the deficit (You have to say the deficit part or you-know-what will happen); immigration reform that rewards a legal path. I'd like to see a commitment to expand the renewables industry and support good jobs but that might not attract all of the candidates, I don't know.

They need to get on it.
