More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    "The West Bank Today" . . .

Dogs from the street can have all the desirable qualities that one could want from pet dogs. Most adopted stray dogs are usually humble and exceptionally faithful to their owners as if they are grateful for this kindness. -- H.M. Bhumibol Adulyadej

The best strategy for Palestinians is to dump the two state solution and insist on equal rights, especially voting rights in Israel. "We are all Israelis now; so let us vote." President Abbas could declare as he stepped down from his almost powerless post as head of the Palestinian Authority. A one state solution seems almost inevitable at this point. The question becomes is Israel a democracy where everyone gets to vote. Currently West Bank Jewish settlers are allowed to vote in Israeli elections, but West Bank non Jews are excluded. If "Samaria" and Judea" (the West Bank) are annexed by Israel, how can non Jews be prohibited from voting and still call Israel a democracy?

Another question is the so called Right of Return. All Jews in the world have it now and Arabs who left as refugees since 1948 do not. Israeli political culture will not budge on Return anytime soon, but if current West Bank and Gaza residents were added to the voting rolesl Knesset bargaining of this issue might eventually lead to adjustments later- probably much later.

Currently the Arab parties make up less than 10% of the Knesset's 120 votes. They weaken themselves further by routinely abstaining from voting and thus avoiding  coalitions with Jews within budget and other major policy legislation. There are so few Arabs that Jewish Knesset members see little reason to include them and would be attacked by the Israeli Right even if the Arabs were willing to help form a government across ethnic lines. If the West Bank and Gaza populations were added to the voting rolls the Arab seats would increase to perhaps 1/3 and suddenly multi ethnic coalitions might seem more attractive to both sides.

Certainly with its overwhelming military advantage the Israeli government will not initiate the extension of full citizenship to non Jews in the West Bank ( let alone Gaza). The drive for a one state solution will have to come from Palestinians.  Of course Israelis could reverse their colonization of the West Bank and revive the 2 state solution, but right now the 2 state plan is just about dead. And that will likely make West Bank Palestinian voting rights in the new Greater Israel the focus of future debate.

    •  Noam Chomsky Believes (0+ / 0-)

that the only reason that Israel allowed itself to enter into negotiations with Arafat and the PLO was because they had built enough settlements and annexed enough land to make the reality of a 2 state solution impossible.  That was back 20 years ago.

      •  Chomsky also believes that Israel is not an (0+ / 0-)

        apartheid state.

He believes the West Bank is 'worse' than apartheid but that Israel proper, while discriminatory, is not apartheid.
