As soon as he's gone, Wisconsin gets Medicaid expansion.
Just a handful of gubernatorial races could
change the healthcare landscape in the nation significantly. These are the states where a Democratic governor could make all the difference in Medicaid expansion. At the top of that list are Wisconsin and Maine.
WISCONSIN: Gov. Scott Walker (R) vs. Mary Burke (D)
This might be the most closely watched governor's race of the fall, and Walker currently holds only the slimmest advantage, according to TPM's PollTracker average. It's also a campaign where the two candidates have sparred over Walker's decision to decline Medicaid expansion and its funding. The state instead restructured its existing Medicaid program, costing the state more than $100 million over two years, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. […]
MAINE: Gov. Paul LePage (R) vs. Mike Michaud (D)
LePage might be the tea partiest of the GOP governors elected in 2010, and he has railed against expanding Medicaid, vetoing bills approved by his legislature three times. He called it "sinful" during one public appearance in May. But he's also losing to his Democratic opponent, Rep. Mike Michaud, by 3.5 percentage points, according to TPM's PollTracker average.
Both Mary Burke and Mike Michaud are strong Medicaid advocates. And both states would be a slam dunk for the expansion—in Wisconsin, the governor makes the decision, and in Maine the legislature has already approved it, only to see it vetoed by LePage. There's no end to the reasons why these two candidates would be huge improvements to their states, but at the top of the list is the extension of healthcare coverage to all the citizens in these states.
Please help elect Mary Burke and Mike Michaud, and all of our endorsed candidates.
