Billionaire Bruce Rauner, who is trying to buy his way into the Illinois governor's mansion, has had a bad week. Tape surfaced about him wanting to get rid of the minimum wage. He had to admit that he belongs to a $100,000 wine club. So he cut a new ad saying he would drive a 20-year-old van to work as governor in what he claims his kids call a "trashcan van."
It's not a good-looking vehicle, that's for sure. And he thinks it will add to his everyman image. Here's a photo of Rauner driving the van, from The Chicago Tribune:
The trouble is, that's not the only vehicle Rauner owns. Oh, no, not by a long shot. The local NBC affiliate just reported that Rauner owns seven vehicles altogether, including three late-model cars. This is to go with his nine homes, including a $4 million penthouse in Chicago's swank Streeterville neighborhood, for which he just spent $100,000 for a new parking space. And I bet it's not for the trashcan van.
But don't forget -- he wears an $18 watch.
This is a candidate who has run basically a substance-free campaign, with almost no specifics on what he would do. His "budget" plan is so full of holes that even the conservative and GOP-leaning Tribune called him out.
How dumb does he think the people of Illinois are? And the scary thing is, although polls have narrowed, he's still leading.
