For two years, the world's coal miners have been plagued by a glut that has battered prices and led to the closure of mines, straining tiny towns from Australia to South Africa.
Now, some of the largest coal exporters are signaling the worst may be over as prices stabilize.
Coal-mining executives say a string of pit shutdowns should finally kick-start the market by curbing supply, while demand from buyers such as China and India appears to be picking up. The optimism is a reversal from past months when companies warned of a sustained market surplus, although they are stopping short of predicting a sharp rebound and see any recovery as gradual.

Indonesia forecasts that nine nickel-processing plants may be completed this year after the largest mined producer banned raw ore exports in January, spurring a rally in refined prices to the highest level since 2012.
The plants comprise two ferronickel and seven nickel-pig-iron smelters, according to data from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. One chemical-grade alumina plant is also scheduled to be completed this year, the data showed.

Nickel Tumbles Most in 16 Weeks on Philippines Outlook
By Joe Deaux and Maria Kolesnikova Sep 9, 2014 12:36 PM PT
Nickel prices tumbled 5 percent on speculation that a ban of ore exports won’t occur anytime soon by the Philippines, the largest supplier to China. Tin dropped to a 13-month low.
The Philippines last month proposed a bill to require ore minerals to be processed before shipment. Congressman Erlpe John Amante said the prohibition may not be implemented for seven years, Reuters reported today. Prices in London have surged 36 percent this year after export restrictions took effect in Indonesia, the world’s top producer of the mined metal. China is the biggest user.
