This diary started its existence as a reply I was going to post in one of the almost endless sea of excellent, thought-provoking diaries about Ferguson and the almost certainly racist murder of Michael Brown, and the definitely racist cover up and justification of young Mr. Brown's execution.
But I decided this was worth more than a comment. True, it might be a bit thin to be a diary, but if I fleshed it out by talking about the Congo Free State (Orwell avant la lettre)/Belgian Congo, the genocide of the Herero or the genocide the Italians inflicted on the people of Libya or other such cases, it would likely become bogged down in historical trench warfare or at least questions about details.
So what do I have to say?
Well, I find it chilling that the biting sarcastic humor of Blackadder, in this case Bkackadder goes Forth, which was referencing the 'Scramble for Africa' at the end of the nineteenth century (late 1800's) should seem to be so discriptive of America in the early 21st century.
Some quotes:
The prerequisite for any battle was that the enemy should under no circumstances carry guns.
Ahem. No comment.
Ten thousand Watutsi warriors armed to the teeth with kiwi fruit and dry guava halves
Obviously they were waving them about in a threatening manner. :-|
... when he was nearly killed by a pygmy woman with a sharpened mango.
'
They' are all dangerous, all the time.
Of course there was some skewering of misplaced gay hating in there too...
If you saw someone in a skirt, you shot him and nicked his country.
To be clear, the Blackadder series was a comedy, but I do not find any of this funny.
Just my two cents...
