Nothing above the fold.
I was livid when I first read the comment.
What am I talking about: Well this:
I wonder if we'll ever sort out the multiethnic problems. I see that other groups have assimilated throughout America's history. The Irish, Germans, Scandinavians, French and other immigrant groups are now fully American with great cultural histories and events. They speak English and they have festivals and traditional events they celebrate without hostility toward other groups.
Unfortunately many Hispanics, or at least those I've talked to over the years, seem more interested in not just keeping their traditions, but subverting other cultures. Many don't want to speak English and actually dislike American cultures that have historically mixed so well. They demand the government communicate to them in Spanish, they demand schools hire Spanish speaking teachers and they envision themselves as part of a voting block that will eventually establish Spanish as a national language in the US. Moreover, many actively despise English speaking people and want to eventually vote them out of power. Culturally, it's less of a celebration of our roots and more of a political strategy to overpower other groups.
I'm mixed race, but it's always frustrated me that my Latino friends and relatives are so anti-American. I want to celebrate our cultural traditions, but I want to be part of the American scene too. Many other Latinos don't.
Hours later, I still feel I can't spew the curse words this comment deserves.
Honestly, I hope the person who said that was a troll, because all other possibilities are even worse.
But the person in question wasn't done, no, a decent human being challenged the nonsense spouted by this person - the response was clear enough...
I just made a point about the fact that (0+ / 0-)
other immigrant groups are/were different.
We are forced to publish documents in German or French or Scandinavian.
We are forced to pay extra for Spanish speaking teachers in our schools.
I don't mind if more English speakers become bilingual. I'm bilingual myself, of course.
I DO mind when my Latino friends and relatives are hostile about English speaking Americans.
See the difference?
Yes and no. I see the difference between you and me, I don't see the difference between me and them.
