Last month I wrote
a diary about my idea to use coloring pages to motivate children to motivate their parents to vote.
I've been doing voter registration for the past few years, with OFA, The League of Women Voters, the Democratic Party of Virginia, and once with the office of the Registrar for my county. Most of the time we are set up in the lobby of a public library. I don't expect many people to register to vote, most of them are already registered, but I am hoping that our presence will remind people that there is an election coming up, especially for midterm elections.
Most of the time, people just walk right by us with barely a glance. I've noticed at least half of the patrons that come in on weekends have children, so I thought it would be good to do something to pique the children's interest.
I did a search on the internet for election related coloring pages and I found quite a few good ones. We have been printing out an assortment of pages and bringing them to the library during voter registration. We offer the pages to the kids or their parents. We also have a few boxes of crayons available for those who have time to do the coloring there in the lobby. This has been bringing attention to our efforts!
I asked asterkitty, an artist on Daily Kos if she could design a coloring page for us, and she designed three! Here is a link to her home page: http://www.alexandrialevin.com/ Go to the bottom of the page for Coloring Pages for Future Voters.
At last month's meetup at Union Station, some of us enjoyed testing out these coloring pages as documented in mimi's diary.
I'd like to encourage everyone involved in voter registration, or working with children to take a look at asterkitty's page and print out some coloring pages to share. She even did some pages for older children, and let's face it, it's even fun for adults to color.
