Police Pursue Stolen Donut Truck!
This was a story on the local news last night that made me laugh. The reporter and news room crew had their fun too!
It sounds like a bad police joke — officers chase and catch donut thief. But it happened in Portland early Tuesday when officers pursued and arrested a suspect who stole a pastry delivery truck.

As the officer was taking the initial report, another Central Precinct officer spotted the stolen van traveling eastbound on Southeast Powell Boulevard near 21st Avenue. The officer got behind the van and activated his overhead lights, but the driver of the van did not stop and the officer engaged in a traffic pursuit.
The suspect the pulled the van over at Southeast 59th Avenue and Mall Street, and the officer commanded him to put both of his hands out the window. When he did, the officer observed a pastry fall from the suspect's hands.
Additional officers arrived and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The victim was transported to the scene to take possession of the van. Officers noted that there were donuts all over the inside of the van, but otherwise there was no damage to the vehicle.
The local reporter and the owner of the van had some fun during the reporting of this story as they pondered which donut the thief was enjoying during his arrest!
I'm laying bets on a raspberry filled donut.

Today is World Vegetarian Day
Oct. 1 is World Vegetarian Day — also the kickoff of Vegetarian Awareness Month — which was founded by NAVS, the North American Vegetarian Society (founded in 1977, the same year I was born!). They succinctly outline some of the excellent reasons to go veg:
Reduce the risk of major killers such as heart disease, stroke and cancer while cutting exposure to foodborne pathogens
Provide a viable answer to feeding the world’s hungry through more efficient use of grains and other crops
Save animals from suffering in factory-farm conditions and from the pain and terror of slaughter
Conserve vital but limited freshwater, fertile topsoil and other precious resources
Preserve irreplaceable ecosystems such as rainforests and other wildlife habitats
Decrease greenhouse gases that are accelerating global warming
Mitigate the ever-expanding environmental pollution of animal agriculture
