Why do people decide not to exercise their right to vote? What is so difficult about sitting aside an hour every two years to exercise your right to vote? Practically every State and County within the USA offers polls with at least twelve hours set aside for voting. Many States even offer No Excuse Absent Voting programs; which grant even more time to vote.
Look at the statistics below:
From website: http://www.electproject.org/
PY = Presidential Year NPY = Non-Presidential Year
Year Turnout
PY 2000 54.2
NPY 2002 39.5
PY 2004 60.1
NPY 2006 40.4
PY 2008 61.6
NPY 2010 41.0
PY 2012 58.2
In Presidential Years roughly 40% of the people who can vote choose NOT to Vote.
In Non-Presidential Years roughly 60% of the people who can vote choose Not to Vote.
Does anyone see a problem with this? Am I the only one who thinks this is completely unacceptable behavior? What needs to be done to change this?
We are now roughly five weeks away from a Non-Presidential Year election; history tells us that around 60% of the people who are eligible to vote – will not do so….. For all those who claim their vote just does not count …. Now is a perfect time to vote, because your vote will count a heck of a lot more since there are so few people voting.
