Short diary, but - in response to the odious ruling today, some of the same folks who organized the protests of HB2 are planning a spontaneous rally-like thing at the Capitol tomorrow. They don't have any permits or anything, so emphasis on the spontaneous. More details below.
Here's the description from the event's Facebook page:
Tomorrow at 12:00pm
Texas State Capitol
1300 North Congress, Austin, Texas 78701
GET MAD. STAY MAD. WALK OUT FOR REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM.
One year ago, Texans had access to more than forty legal abortion clinics. Friday morning, that number was reduced to just eight, thanks to a ruling from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans that enables the state of Texas to enforce HB 2, the omnibus anti-abortion bill that brought thousands of orange-clad Texans to the state capitol in the summer of 2013. As a result of this court ruling, one million Texans who might need abortion care will now live more than 150 miles from legal abortion facilities. The vast majority of those affected will be low-income people of color and trans, queer and gender non-conforming people. Anti-choice politicians and right-wing activist judges have effectively wrestled access to legal abortion care out of the hands of all but the most privileged Texans.
The University of Texas community and the Austin community at large must stand in solidarity against this. On October 3, we will walk to the state capitol south steps, meeting at noon to bear witness to this unconscionable injustice. We'll see you at high noon.
Today, tomorrow and forever after, we will repeat the cry: WE WILL NOT YIELD.
spread the word - I'm off to set out something orange to wear tomorrow
