I'm not quite sure I can properly tell this story but I have to try. It's in memory of Emma.
A few months ago Persiflage and I joined Kindred Hearts Transport Connection. This is a 501(c) group, generated through the internet, that provides transport for rescued animals from their fosters, after rescue from kill facilities, to their forever homes or to sanctuaries that care for them, treat them medically, physically and lovingly until they can be adopted to a good home.
Our first call was to drive Emma on the second leg of her journey from Myrtle Beach, SC to North Berwick, Maine. To Another Chance Animal Sanctuary, to Molly and Cheryl.
Squiggle be damned! More below...
We were so happy to help! When we met the first transporter at the decided upon place we were so excited! We had two slip leashes, as required. We actually had to borrow them since we have only cats but we got them!
Our poor old hearts melted when we met Emma, a beautiful two year old, or there about, chocolate brown Lab. She weighed only 26 pounds. She had been abused and dumped. She was rescued and fostered for a month. She had a chance at a good life and a forever home.
We had prepared the back of our SUV for her to spread out and be comfy. She wanted only to hide on the floor behind the front seat. She was terrified and I ended up riding in the back with her trying to soothe.
We met our next transporter and gingerly got her situated into the car. At this point we knew she was a high flight risk due to fear and constantly messaged each transporter to share info and tips.
Emma overnighted with a family in Baltimore and finally, after two days, 14 transporters and 16 legs of the journey, arrived in Maine at http://www.anotherchanceanimalrescue.org. Into the loving care of Molly.
Emma had a meet and greet the following day with a potential adoptive family which went well. BUT, first she had to be treated for heart worms. Of course she had them! Dumped, abused, of course she had them.
Molly kept all of we transporters informed. We were so in love with Emma! And then the dreaded news... Emma didn't survive the treatment which is so brutal. She just didn't have any reserves left. We all cried bitter tears.
I promised to spread the word about prevention, which I have honored. In memory of sweet Emma.
Now comes the salt in the wound. Molly and her colleague Cheryl have taken in five dogs from a kill shelter here in NC, all heart worm positive. They need treatment and will receive it regardless of whether Another Chance can pay immediately. But each dog's treatment is around $500. There have been fundraisers, the shelter has a thrift store to help with expenses but we're talking $2500.
I know from the experience with sweet Emma that Molly takes these pups home during treatment and nurses them as does Cheryl. They are committed to getting the dogs healthy and placed into a loving home.
Persiflage and I sent money today to help, the first time I'm aware of Molly asking for it. This is an overwhelming situation.
If you are so inclined, please send a bit, it all adds up and will help defray the cost of treatment and the possibility of a good life in a loving forever home. I ask in memory of Emma.
