I didn't think it would really happen. Certainly not so soon. There were a lot of bumps in the road, and more to come, but I'm in an apartment of my own, in an elderly/disabled building. It's fully subsidized, heat, hot water, and trash removal included.
Granted, I'm in the absolute sticks of Maine. But the apartment is a one-bedroom, and so much larger than I'd imagined! I could easily fit two of my bed in the bedroom, and still have room to get around and have dressers, the living room is larger still. And the kitchen! So much storage and counter space, a new refrigerator and stove, heaps of cupboards and drawers, a cut-through to the living room so I can see to the window while doing dishes, it's lovely! And so much closet space...with shelving! It even has an assessable, large shower in the bathroom (so no worries about how to get out if I fall).
There's a fully functional health center just up the road, and I had my first visit today, and my new doctor seems wonderful. She comes highly recommended, as well. I'll be going once a month, and I have another appointment on Friday to see the health coordinators, and once the insurance is settled, I'll be seeing an orthopedic specialist.
How am I getting there, without MaineCare (which provides rides) or a car? Well, there's a sweet couple who have decided that I need looking after, when I moved in almost on my own. If they go to the store, I get a knock on the door. They insist on bringing me to the doctor's, and to Rite-Aid. I get visits, and they introduce me to other people in the building. I'm beyond grateful, and they are a gift.
So, I'm starting to get to a place where I can manage. And I have to thank all of you here at Daily Kos. I have no idea who sent the Sterilite containers, because it didn't say in the box, but thank you, they really did make the move more manageable (and that box of yarn is going to be sorted straight into them!). I have an amazing canister vacuum that made me cry, and works like nobody's business, and is even my favorite brand. There are feather duvets; and duvet covers and curtains and lights; and comfy pillows. There's a sewing machine, and a basket of all the little things that are just the sort of things I'd forget, and yarn.
To finish:
I'm having a housewarming 1 November (a Saturday) from 1100-1700. If you're willing or able to come up to the Sebago Lake area of York County, Maine, please send me a KosMail or email me at loreleihi at live dot com.
I hope to see you!
