"A mom or dad working full time on a minimum wage does't earn enough to make ends meet. That's not right. It's long past time for us to raise the minimum wage." –– President Obama
Mike Honda, endorsed by President Obama, has been working tirelessly to promote an increase in the minimum wage since long before it became a national issue and movement. Silicon Valley has a higher rate of families making an income of over a $100,000.00 a year than the rest of the country, yet income inequality continues to grow.
Congressman Mike Honda debates "Democratic" yet right of center, challenger Ro Khanna for District 17, at San Jose State University on Tuesday, October 7, 2014
In the Fall of last year, Congressman Mike Honda and the Congressional Progressive Caucus, sent a
letter to President Obama requesting he use his executive powers to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 for federal contract workers. The President responded favorably by signing the executive action. But, the Republican controlled congress hasn't raised the minimum wage in seven years and continues to refuse to allow a vote despite the
28 million workers across the country who would benefit.
In 2013, the city of San Jose was in a heated battle whether or not to raise the minimum wage to $10.00. Although Mayor Chuck Reed and the San Jose Chamber of Commerce led a fierce campaign to defeat the measure, San Jose overwhelmingly voted to increase the minimum wage. The higher wage is credited with reducing unemployment and increasing business.
Mike Honda's challenger, Ro Khanna, was recently endorsed by both the San Jose Chamber of Commerce who called Khanna "right of center" on business, and Mayor Chuck Reed whom Khanna called, "an American Hero."
That's why Daily Kos readers of Silicon Valley will be joining the one candidate who has always been on the side of the working family, Mike Honda. Please join us tomorrow!
