A federal judge in North Carolina has just struck down North Carolina's ban(s) on marriages of same-sex couples. The judge has also issued an injunction prohibiting state officials from enforcing those bans. Couples are now receiving marriage licenses in North Carolina. Congratulations, North Carolina!
In addition, the SCOTUS has lifted the stay on the Ninth Circuit's mandate/order regarding the marriage equality case/ruling in Idaho. We are now awaiting an order from the Ninth Circuit, which could come at any time.
Update 1:
Governor Otter has issued a statement.
The Supreme Court’s order lifting Justice Kennedy’s stay effectively allows same-sex marriage in Idaho as soon as the 9th Circuit directs compliance with its decision. I disagree with the court’s conclusion, which negates the 2006 vote of the people of Idaho, is contrary to the values of most Idahoans, and undermines fundamental states’ rights. But we are a nation of laws. Idaho now should proceed with civility and in an orderly manner to comply with any forthcoming order from the 9th Circuit.
