The Associated Press has the details of Duncan’s treatment and death. They use abstracts from his medical records and some comments from a doctor who reviewed his care at the hospital. The information appears to be from a copy of the hospital’s medical records on Duncan released to members of his family.
The article includes information about his first admission to the hospital and the work up that the ER put him through before discharging him (including some information that I’ve never heard of previously.)
Come below the shepherd's crook virus for some additional information and a link to the story.
From his initial visit to the hospital:
Not 55 hours earlier, Duncan had come to the same emergency room complaining of a headache and abdominal pain. His temperature spiked to 103 at one point, and on a scale of one to 10, he rated his pain as an eight.
Doctors ran CT scans of his head and abdomen and did extensive blood tests before deciding it must be sinusitis. They sent him home with a course of antibiotics and told him to follow up with a doctor the next day.
A nurse's note said Duncan told her he recently had arrived from Africa. Somehow, that information did not make it to the attending physician.
The article also includes in some detail, how he fared after being admitted to the hospital on his return a little over two days later. It makes mention of some of the anger, frustration and sadness expressed by his family members.
Several questions still remain concerning his delayed diagnosis and treatment. Among others: How did they arrive at his initial diagnosis that led to his discharge? Would he have fared better had he been admitted during his first visit? How did the information concerning the fact that he had just left West Africa not get to the ER's treating physician? Some of these may never be answered with certainty. Or at least not without additional investigation.
