It's being reported by major outlets - Reuters, Forbes, Scientific American, Aviation Week...
Given the gravity of the Ebola situation in Texas, maybe it's not surprising that another story, especially a science/technology story like this, get's overlooked. But if this is remotely true then it is a major event. I recently dissed fusion as being "20 years away, same as it was 30 years ago" in a comment just a day or so ago here. So it's a little surprising to see what appears to be real news organizations mentioning this.
There's a Wikipedia entry for High Beta Fusion Reactor, noting that Lockheed Martin had presented their idea at a Google "Solve for X" forum February 7, 2013. So it's not a secret that Lockheed Martin has been working on this idea. Maybe I recall hearing a little bit about it...but if I did I dismissed it as the same pablum regarding fusion I've been hearing since I was a young boy.
Lockheed Martin says they will test a "compact fusion reactor" within a year, and have a prototype within 5 years. Their Skunk Works has a reputation for doing some big things. They are company that has some pull, and probably the ear of the MIC.
Is this real?
