...is my friend.
In this case, GOP-tea Maine incumbent Governor Paul LePage's "friendship" with independent candidate Eliot Cutler is predicated on one thing alone...he isn't the friend of Democratic nominee and front runner Congressman Mike Michaud.
Yesterday this flyer was sent out to primarily young Democratic women urging them to compare all three candidates for Maine Governor on the demographically targeted issues of guns and abortion. It aimed to erode possible support for Mike Michaud, showed LePage's stances on these issues as an unattractive alternative, and sought to position the independent candidate as the voters' best alternative.
The flyer issue pushing young female votes toward Cutler did not come from him, it was paid and authorized by the Maine Republican Party. As noted elsewhere, it has never been LePage's intent to bring Maine together or to build a legitimate and inclusive majority. Because his electoral ceiling cannot grow, his only gambit is to divide the vote between his opponents at some level that allows him to sneak back into the Blaine House. There, most disturbingly, he will continue to divide and definitely will not serve the interests of young women who on the receiving end of this despicable and dishonest tactic.
For reference, here is Mike Michaud's statement on issues of interest to women. NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and many women endorse him.
