I need your help again for this year's Veterans Day event.
Each year I sponsor a Veterans Day celebration in my senior building. I don't have enough money at this moment to put it on. This weekend I wrote a cancellation flyer, but did not have the heart to post it. I have posted a couple of diaries asking for help with some results.
I received a winter coat for one of the vets who is without one. Really wonderful condition. (Thanks, kiddo), and $25.00 through Paypal and bought some socks with it. A few months ago I bought the beans for the chili but not the vegetables or meat for it.
I need some more donations or I will have to cancel the luncheon this year.
I live in a subsidized building so no one here has any extra money. That includes me, unfortunately.
This will be the 4th year of this celebration. Some of the vets have passed on, a few moved to nursing homes and so on. But each year we have new tenants who are veterans so the number of current vets remains about the same, 27 or 28. We have a smaller group of Korean War vets but most are vets from Viet Nam. I need your help to make it happen.
I really do need your help. Time is rapidly running out to do anything. Can you please help me make it happen? You have been very generous in the past for this event so I charged a few things like some sweatshirts and other clothing. Starbucks always contributes a pound of coffee beans for a gift. And Panera bread will contribute some pastries. The other food I have to pay for.
I've bought some little gifts that are on sale in stores around my neighborhood. Since I live on social security only, my budget is stretched a lot before contributions from you all come in.
Some of the veterans in my building are in their late 70s, and 80s. They thoroughly appreciate whatever we do for them. It has built and continues to foster a profound sense of community here. There are several vets who still suffer from PTSD and this has connected them with the larger building community. This event means so much to each of them, to be remembered, to be acknowledged.
Recognition of Service
Veteran's Name, on behalf of a grateful nation and in recognition of the years you served your country with honor, we say "Thank You."
It is said that no one desires or loves peace more than a soldier, because he or she must bear the burden of war. In this time of hopeful peace for us all, we remember your service. Mindful of the passing years we say to you that we remember, and we say thank you for your service to our country.
If anyone here wants to contribute, every penny would be used for the celebration or given in an envelope directly to a veteran. Please let me know either in a DailyKos email or in a comment. If you like, I will then give you my personal email address, my physical address, full name and anything else you desire (well, mostly, e.g. I'm not giving up any grandchild.)
I know there are so very many places to send money to, especially in this election year. We lose so many vets each year but the remaining veterans are looking forward to this year's celebration and I can't let them down. (My building is a CHA subsidized building and money is always short here.) Everyone is grateful here for your help. My gratitude to you would move a mountain.
Can you help me to show our gratitude for their service to our country? I have set up
a Paypal account. Just click this button and donate whatever you can. And thank you!

Wed Oct 29, 2014 at 2:17 PM PT: UPDATE: Many thanks to each of the folks who have contributed! Every penny will be used for the veterans. I still need donations, however, in order to get the rest of the food and some more gifts for the luncheon.
If there is anyone on this site that can afford to donate for this, may I make a personal plea to you - please donate. I don't mind begging for my vets here, not at all. Please, please. And thank you.
