Monday morning, Foster's Daily Democrat in New Hampshire
published a blistering attack on Sen. Jeanne Shaheen by former House Speaker Marshall Cobleigh. Cobleigh wrote that she "is a big part of the problem" in high gas prices. Which should have been the Daily Democrat's first clue to take another look at this letter, which was submitted by the New Hampshire GOP. Because gas prices aren't all that high right now.
That, and the fact that Cobleigh died in 2009. This op-ed was written by Cobleigh in 2008, and originally published in July 2008 in Shaheen's first run. But the New Hampshire GOP thought it was such a great rebuttal of an exchange between Shaheen and challenger Scott Brown that they sent it out again.
Buzz Dietterle, the FDD's opinion page editor, says that the New Hampshire GOP submitted the column (which originally ran in the conservative Union Leader). On its own web site, the party credits the op-ed to the "late, great" politician, and offers it as evidence that Shaheen has flip-flopped on nuclear power. At some point in the re-publication process, the minor detail of Cobleigh's mortal status was left out.
Since this nugget was uncovered, the FDD has updated its note to reflect Cobleigh's being a dead person. And the New Hampshire Republican Party has a little bit of egg on its face, with spokeswoman Lauren Zelt releasing a contradictory statement:
We did not intend for this op-ed to be republished and clearly listed the original date of publication and mentioned that Marshall had passed away. But we’re sure that somewhere Marshall Cobleigh is looking down and laughing at the fact that he had once last chance to debunk the lies of his old nuclear power nemesis.
Why they would have sent it out to editorial boards if they didn't intend to have it be republished isn't really clear. Nor is why they have tried to resurrect a six-year-old fight that isn't really all that relevant to
this campaign.

Could it be that they can't find any high profile Republicans who are also from New Hampshire who are willing to write op-eds in support of Scott Brown, the guy from Massachusetts?
