Wars, abuse, disease, hunger and poverty, is it any wonder people flee?
Now Europe is basically saying go ahead drown for all we care:
“Ministers across Europe have expressed concerns that search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean … [are] encouraging people to make dangerous crossings in the expectation of rescue. This has led to more deaths as traffickers have exploited the situation using boats that are unfit to make the crossing,” the statement said.
No, desperation has lead to the exploitation not the thought of a possible rescue.
The old Empires created countries where there were none, created artificial divides without respect to the indigenous population. Old Empires exploited and asset stripped without mercy. The litany of abuse is never ending. Is it any wonder that people see Europe and it's streets that are comparatively made of gold, much of it taken from Africa in the first place.
We only care about Ebola because it now scares us, Ebola is just one of the many ways to die in Africa. The poverty, the lack of basic health care, the lack of clean water, so what if children die in the mines digging minerals for our stuff, and so what if our corporations bribe their way across the continent. The only goddamned good G W Bush ever did in his life was in Africa with the fight against aids, don't ask me why, it seemed to touch something within him.
Now we seem to be saying, go ahead drown, see if we care.
Problem solved.
“The vague prospect of rescue has never been the incentive. War, poverty and persecution are what make desperate people take terrible risks. History will judge this decision as unforgiveable,”

The country whose Empire ransacked Africa the most is at the head of the new "don't give a shit" policy.
Goddammit, if you want the flow to stop, put something of what you stole back.
I am sorry, but this type of obscene reasoning and fraudulent concern gets me spitting mad.
You want to help Africa, education, women's rights, health care and keeping religion out of population management might be worthwhile. Investing some of the wealth we have made back into Africa via the people themselves might stop/slow down the emigration. It's an enormous task and its all too easy to asset strip.
