Judge Tom Ervin, a Republican running for Governor as an Independent, has suspended his campaign and endorsed the Democratic candidate running against Nikki Haley, the Republican incumbent. Although Ervin had a good deal of support (poling as high as 17%), he apparently put the state of South Carolina ahead of his own ambitions and Republican party affiliation when he endorsed Vincent Shaheen. The State newspaper has also endorsed Shaheen and published several editorials promoting him and outlining their problems with Governor Haley's leadership. How that will play out on November 4 remains to be seen.
As a newbie to these diaries, I'll try to post links to the video of this announcement and to the State newspaper for Sunday, October 26. If I'm not successful, I'll post anyway without the links.
6:02 PM PT: Thanks for the many kind words for those of us struggling along in South Carolina. I'd also like to direct you to entlord's comments. He went to college with Judge Ervin and reminded us that Tom's great-uncle was none other than Sam Irvin, of Watergate fame (on the good side, of course.)
