I confess to sometimes being less than happy with Democrats, and sometimes outright angry with policies and half-measures they have taken. Specifically, I am disappointed with Barack Obama's presidency and not surprised that his approval ratings are as low as they are.
That said, I vote for Democrats and will continue to vote for them as long as I live, I think. The reason--Republicans have always tried to rig elections and always, always have been willing to stomp on citizen's right to vote. The current rush to adopt restrictive voting changes shows their intent beyond a shadow of a doubt.
To my knowledge, every state that has a Republican trifecta has enacted voting restrictions in the name of "Voter Integrity". The playbook is the same--start beating the drum about voter fraud, show some grainy pictures of foreign-appearing non-white people at a polling place, say that we need a Photo ID for everything from cough medicine to buying groceries and then enact a law that is clearly an attempt to suppress votes from Democratic constituencies.
It appears to me that this course of action has been effective more times than not. The so-called safety net from this legislation is the courts. We have seen (again IMHO) courts go all over the map in approving, denying, or delaying voting restrictions dressed up as Voter ID legislation.
I come from Minnesota and have developed an appreciation for open and fair elections. We have seen several barnburners in this state, with the closest and most-recent being Al Franken's defeat of Norm Coleman via a recount. My oldest recollection is a Democrat (Karl Rolvaag) defeating a Republican for governor by 89 votes in the early 60s. That election, too, required a recount. Both of those elections, and several others not quite as close, increased my esteem for fair, open and free elections. We can register at the polls in Minnesota and defeated a Photo ID measure that got on the ballot when we had a Republican leg, but had Mark Dayton as governor (whose election was also recounted).
I don't know what it will take for the public to realize what the Republican Party is blatantly attempting to do (piecemeal), but I can't and won't ever vote for someone who subverts the principles of this country and the Constitution in order to rig elections.
