Earl Everett, the Democratic candidate for Congress from eastern Oklahoma, has succumbed to injuries suffered in a vehicular accident Friday while crossing Highway 62, according to AP reports. The 81-year-old Korean War veteran and retired teacher was challenging first-term Republican incumbent Markwayne Mullin for Oklahoma Congressional District 2.
Everett first ran in 2012 taking 12 percent of the vote in the June primary. That forced fellow Democrats Wayne Herriman and Rob Wallace into a run-off. Wallace won the party nod in August, but lost to Mullin that November. This year Everett ran against Joshua Harris-Till and handily defeated him in the June primary.
Everett was a vocal supporter of raising taxes. "The taxes at this time are not sufficient enough to fund needed programs, although there are some programs that could be deleted," Everett said.
