I'll keep this diary short. It appears that Democrats have been dependent on the minority vote to win elections. However, in off-year non-presidential elections, Democrats are scrambling to cobble together coalitions with liberal whites which can win in a downsized electorate.
Given that the netroots are typically majority-white, the idea machine needs to begin now to see how to better communicate democratic ideals and philosophies to the broader white electorate. Repeatedly there are events, comments, and narratives which have taken aim at President Obama and the former democratic Senate which appeal to white, rural, nativist, and racial sentiments, yet the democratic grassroots has shown little appetite to face these occurrences head-on. That has got to change.
That being said, I am asking people to comment and discuss. However, as a minority (African-American), I am going to listen because I don't believe white Americans talk enough about their whiteness and how that social construct relates to the today's political reality. Republicans bet on this mindset and exploit it in the midterms. In an off-year elections, Republicans have no problem manipulating the majority population's fears.
As Democrats, how can we play in the same sandbox yet appeal to white Americans' hopes in an increasing multicultural America?
