I'm not a constitutional scholar, but something has been bothering me seriously lately and I believe this should be a serious concern for all Democrats and all Americans.
Republicans have not only been winning seats in the House and the Senate, but they have been winning and maintaining Governorships throughout the country. They have also been maintaining or building on their majorities in the state houses and senates. And given the facts that Democrats seems to have really given up on Mid-Term elections all together, many Midwestern(WI, IL, IA, MI), North-Eastern(MA, ME, NJ,MD) and Western states (NV) now have not only elected Republican Governors, but they have re-elected them. Because of Republican Gerrymandering, we all know that Democrats have NO way of winning Southern States anytime soon, furthermore, any states that hold elections in Mid-term years have NO chance of going Democratic, except maybe a handful like Oregon, California, Washington.
The main problem is not only the current control but the complete inability of Democrats to even come close to winning some of these legislatures back. Here in NC, Democrats won the popular vote in the 2012 elections, but Republicans maintained a veto-proof majority in the state legislature in 2012. Republicans also confirmed that veto-proof majority in 2014. I'm sure the NC model is similar is many states controlled by Republicans and Koch Brothers.
I was reading today that, in order to amend the constitution, Two-thirds of the State legislatures must call on Congress to hold a Constitutional Convention.
Currently, the Republicans control 28 state legislatures. They just need 6 more to reach 34. I don't think it is out of reach. We can't afford to wait for this to happen, before we start worrying about it.
Republicans control 30 Governorships in the Country out of 50. In most Southern states, Democrats have NO chance of winning Governorships or even State Legislatures. But in some states run by Democrats, democrats need to really fight hard to keep control. And many Democrat Governors act like Republicans (Cuomo, ...)
Now that the Koch Brothers have wrestled control of the US-House for the next 6 years at least, thanks to Gerrymandering, the Senate (I think it is safe to say that No Democrat will ever win a senate Seat in the South or maybe even Midwest again soon: People like Manchin will soon become Republican or lose), the Supreme Court (their judges are younger than ours), the majority of Governorships(we can't even win Governors in Blue states anymore: MD, WI, IL), the majority of State Legislatures , how worry should we all be, that the Koch Brothers start thinking about changing our Constitution?
The Koch Brothers are really going for the Juggernaut. They are really going for the K.O. of the American Democratic Process. If Americans don't use their voting powers today, they won't even realize when it has been taken away from them "Democratically".
I understand that Democrats have big hopes for 2016, but let's be honest, voting once every 4 years is just not going to cut it for us. I'm very worried about how the Koch Brothers will use and expand their newly gained powers.
