Welcome to the November 14, 2014 Post Game Show for Mojo Friday!
I know that today's diary is headlined with Global Warming. But Global Warming is just one aspect of all the comes with Climate Change. Those too short-sighted to look beyond their own front door (I'm thinking especially of tea-party republicans here I must confess) think that because it's snowing in November, that global warming is a farce. They are wrong. And could be dead wrong.
I had the opportunity back in the early 1990's to see some of the work underway in research on climate change and global warming at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado. A neat place ... and the biggest predictions from their research more than 15 years ago (!) was not just that we'd have planet (global warming) underway, but that the variability in weather (hot and cold) and intensity of storms would increase quite dramatically.
For all the republican leaders who like to say "I'm no scientist" ... I like to say "well, the scientists have been bloody right about it all so far. What are you going to do about it?"
With regard to our near-sighted country-people, I think it's much better to refer to this as climate change, not global warming. So they don't respond immediately by pointing to November snow fall. Focus on the increased intensity and frequency of storms (winter and summer), of tornadoes, of rising seas ... and whether caused by man-kind or not, what can we do, and what are we going to do, to ameliorate the symptoms and what can we do to address the root causes of these issues?
However, that assumes they'll listen and converse. Neither of which has been proven to be true so far.
NASA has their own perspective on this issue of language, of global warming or climate change. You might enjoy reading it: Whats in a Name? Global Warming vs. Climate Change
And now for the fun ...
Today's Mojo Friday diary is Mojo Friday - Early Arctic Chill Confuses Global Warming Deniers! - Edition
