On Thursday the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District of Mexico (Mexico's equivalent of the District of Columbia) passed a bill which will allow people to legally change their gender without a court order.
The former legal process was lengthy and legally complicated, which priced it out of the reach of most transgender citizens.
The legislation was proposed by Mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera. The bill passed 42-0 with 6 abstentions.
In a press release issued after the bill’s passing, the President of the Commission for Assistance to Vulnerable Groups in Mexico City, Jorge Cruz Zepeda, described the legal progress as “inevitable.” He explained that Mexico City has a diverse culture and that, as society changes, policies and regulations must be adapted to respect and recognize all sexualities and gender identities.
Mexico City serves as a leader in Latin America with regard to transgender rights. Their comprehensive anti-discrimination law extends beyond sexual orientation to include both gender identity and expression. Transphobia is explicitly listed as a form of discrimination.
Manuel Granados Covarrubias of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, known by the Spanish acronym PRD, welcomed the proposal’s approval.
It eliminates cumbersome trials and judicial proceedings, procedures, to generate the administrative change of a legal action to which everyone has the right. “Their dignity is also recognized.

The Mexico City Commission to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination, known by its Spanish acronym COPRED, launched a campaign in support of the measure.
