Bernie Sanders is determined to write a bill proposing that Voting Day be a national holiday. Bravo! However, to get people to participate in their Democracy, and keep it strong in the process, we must give them reasons and motivations to vote.
A National Voting holiday would be a big step in the right direction in getting the American people to embrace the whole concept of Democracy and therefore strengthen our Democracy. I would like to propose going one step further. Let's write a bill declaring Veteran's Day as National Voting!
Millions of Americans have died defending this country and it's democracy. They truly deserve to be honored for sacrificing everything to preserve our right to vote. What better way to honor their memory and sacrifice than to vote on Veteran's Day.
If such a bill is introduced it would be interesting to see how Republicans would attack such a bill and explain not voting for it. The spin would be dizzying, but entertaining. Republicans use the "Patriot card" when it suits their needs, such as denouncing those millions who came out against the invasion of IRAQ. But, invoking a sense of Patriotism to promote Democracy here at home is very legitimate, and honorable.
I have written Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren about this possibility. Also, I have started a petition on MOVEON calling for such a bill to be written and passed for the American people. Please sign the petition if you think this might be a good idea.
