Darren Wilson may have won this battle, but he may have taken the first step toward losing the war by offering to tell his story. Apparently Wilson forgot that the grand jury's decision not to indict him isn't anywhere near the end of it for him. Not only does he face the prospect of federal charges, but it's a near-certainty that Michael Brown's family will file a wrongful death suit against him. If I'm the Brown family's legal team and I'm watching Wilson's interview with George Stephanopoulos, I'm probably salivating at how to use this at trial. But I'm also wondering what Wilson's lawyers were thinking.
Think about it. If I had been Wilson's lawyer, and I knew that my client is almost certainly facing a civil suit and possibly federal criminal charges, I'd have told Wilson, "Shut your trap and let me do your talking for you." The fact Wilson even thought about going to the media tells me that his lawyers don't know the first thing about crisis management.
If and when Wilson finally faces his reckoning, this interview will mark the point that said reckoning began. Mark it down.
