I wasn't so amazed to see that New York City (NYC) had a deer population when I was browsing the online edition of the New York Times. What was surprising to me was that these gentle and beautiful non human residents of the Big Apple might be murdered!
As I delved deeper into the Informative article in the NYT by Ms. Lisa Foderado I learned that deer do this thing called "browse" in a place called Buck's Hollow and that browsing wasn't appreciated. I guess you could say bucks aren't appreciated in bucks hollow. More revelations over the browse line.
No doubt by this time city residents are observing this other thing deer do that has a special name called "rut". Rut is how they make more little baby deer and though people might have seen elaborate courtship rituals for other species on the Disney channel the whitetail rut goes far beyond the bounds of what would be considered consensual sex on the PC list of "quaint things animals do".
Besides taking a less than benign look at white tail deer. The city parks department is even considering a "cull" which is a polite way of saying murder. More than likely by some gun loons within the department who have been itching to let loose their murderous blood thirsty urges. No doubt due to issues of manhood and penises and stuff.
Fortuitously the Times article mentions the only natural and harmonious answer to the situation of an overabundance of nature. The article states that mountain lions and wolves used to live in the city. If they could simply facilitate the return of these natural predators no deer would be killed.
What????!!! I can hear the quaint New Yorkerish expressions of dismay all the way out here in fly over country, probably stated using vocabulary not usually found in the Grain Silo Gazette.
Actually humans, deer, wolves, and mountain lions have coexisted in an atmosphere of mutual respect and natural ecological balance for billions of years. Also as we've learned out west here a natural compliment of predators brings water to the landscape and makes ecological gardens of eden out of areas formerly wastelands. Look at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. As I learned from the zoologist George Moonbat (featured writer at the Guardian) wolves actually made that river go where it does, imagine what they could do for the five burroughs?
If you are thinking that there simply are not enough deer to feed a full compliment of predators guess again. On Staten Island 24 became 800 in the blink of an eye. Besides, think about it, if predators were to eat all the deer we'd of run out of deer a long time ago don't you think? Predators and prey self regulate using The Balance of Nature, a happy equilibrium where all are valued equally.
No big predators are not dangerous to humans, they have much more to fear of us than we do of them. Humans are evil, animals are innocent, look how many of them men have murdered and yet since the beginning of time neither a wolf nor a mountain lion has ever killed a human.
