He said, "I don't want my tax dollars to go to those people. They should get a job like everyone else." How many times have you heard that one?
I answered.
"In a capitalist society there are winners and losers, we know this. For those with compassion we must act on behalf of those who are not the winners lest they starve, suffer a lack of healthcare or need shelter. By design a capitalist society must have losers since success is measured by wealth on the Bell Curve. I will work until I am dead against those without the compassion to recognize what we are as Americans and by Constitution and nature, the social equality we must have as a society."
We argued. I don't think he got it. So, I said,"If America has a militarized police force that is aggressive, abusive and is rarely convicted of breaking a law; is involved in never-ending warfare; ignores the atmosphere it pollutes; ignores climate change; has a Congress that is unable to govern; ignores racial injustice and deprives minorities of their voting rights; has twenty-seven states that refuse to offer citizens a healthcare program; seeks to control female medical procedures; allows unlimited corporate (bribes) campaign contributions; gives unwarranted access to corporations in the formation of government policy; permits gerrymandering that favors one political party; has a Congress that ignores the will of the people; has legislated sexual practices; diminishes the safety net; destroys labor unions; invents scandals whose purpose is to demean a President; has a Supreme Court that rules by ideology; then I ask, “Where is America going?”
Where do these people come from, I wondered?
