Animals are smart enough not to crap where they live. Not so American Style Capitalism. It is more like the type of parasite the ultimately kills its host after sucking it dry. It has evolved--with the help of deregulation--into a global phenomenon that no longer has loyalty to a single country or dependence on a single economy. This permits it to trash its home with not so much as a second thought. It is above the law--no, it makes its own law.
The detritus of capitalism is observable at a number of levels. Entire economies here and in Europe became so many trash piles in 2008 as a result of gluttonous and irresponsible profit seeking by the financial sector.
In the US, our infrastructure, part of the commons that enabled business and industry to prosper at the public expense, is turning to rust and dust. Congress will not allocate money to rebuild (thereby creating hundreds of thousands of jobs) because their business overlords no longer need bridges and highways for their commerce. Finance is today's preeminent business sector and telecommunications is the infrastructure in ascendance that they rely on.
The American worker is nearing irrelevance, having been largely replaced by robots, digital automation and cheap labor in other countries. Increasing numbers of workers are being consigned to the dustbin of history. Human lives being tossed aside like so much rancid beef.
Wilderness is being despoiled at an awful rate and the atmosphere is being poisoned to the point of no return as we witness the last gasp of the extractive industries. Industries that choose to go down fighting and taking all of us with them, rather than concede the obvious.
Capitalism is amoral by charter and short sighted by nature. Having become essentially unrestrained in recent decades, it now seems to be hell bent on proving Marx correct when he asserted that it contains the seeds of its own destruction. I am pleased to see capitalism on its way out, I find the collateral social, economic and environmental damage owing to its existence to be unconscionable.
