Hello and welcome to my first diary.
In truth, I'm not much of a writer, but I felt the need to expand upon a post I'd made in a separate thread regarding the brutal murder of two gay men in an Islamic state:
http://www.dailykos.com/...
In the expected fashion, the thread divided into basically two camps:
1. Those who felt that religion was to blame
2. Those who felt that human nature was to blame
Full disclosure - I'm in camp number 1.
Here's what I posted in the other diary:
Given the nature of this website, I should think that the vast majority of Kossacks are in favor of gun control.
Consider this. When presented with the ever-mounting stacks of evidence that firearms do indeed lead to horrific violence (JFK, James Brady, Columbine, Sandy Hook) the opposing view is that, "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."
The participants in this thread who are vehemently defending religion are saying essentially the same thing. It's not the idea or thing that is responsible. It's the people.
Now, mind you, I'm not suggesting that religion needs to be legislated or anything Orwellian like that.
I do wonder, though, how many of the apologists here are prepared to grapple with the fact that they agree with the NRA. How does it feel?
And, more importantly, if you don't like how it feels, are you prepared to admit that religion is very much responsible for bad things, including homophobia?
I'd like very much to discuss this in greater detail. What are your thoughts?
