A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Good morning Kogs and Kossacks in Dailykosland!
Let's start the working week with a Moral Monday.
Favorite edible presents?
What do you get the person who has everything?
Or the person who doesn't need or want "things" for Christmas?
Or the person who lives in a small space and has nowhere to put anything?
I was taught that the best choice in these circumstances is a very small amount of a high quality consumable gift. Something that does not have to be stored because it will be used up.
A cook might like a package of chili threads, saffron powder or Madagascar vanilla beans.
I used to work with a woman who gave out small packages of incredible homemade spiced pecans every Xmas. These pecans were buttery and savory, not sweet. I have no idea what she put on them, and I have not worked there for almost 20 years, but I still remember those pecans!
My mom had two homemade holiday gift specialities. The first was her variation on the toll house cookie. It had about 1/3 the amount of (dark) chocolate chips and about three times the amount of walnuts.
I have yet to find a gourmet cookie for sale at any price that even comes close to the magnificence of "mom's house cookies".
But the real rarity was her creamy chocolate fudge she only made in small batches during the holidays, to give to family and friends who waited for it all year.
She was such an expert at this, she didn't even need a candy thermometer to gauge the consistency — doing it all by sight and how it felt to stir it and how it came off the spoon.
Folks drove all the way across town to get a small tin of that fudge.
Some edible gifts have not worked out well. I received 12 chocolate covered strawberries from a famous company whom I will not name since it may have just been an aberration. But the strawberries were mushy and the chocolate coating was tasteless brown colored wax. At about $5 per berry that was a real waste.
Do you send edible gifts for the holidays? Are they homemade, or from a gourmet specialty site?
And am I the only one who likes fruitcake?
What are your favorite edible gifts to give and receive?

THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY
by cooper888 ♥ for Sacramento Kossacks
We heard from navajo and Meteor Blades about the initiative by Daily Kos to have active Kossack groups in each of the state capitals. DK is looking for engaged Kossack's ready to roll up their sleeves and participate in many different types of activism/advocacy. For example, delivering petitions to the state capitol, participating in various protests, marches, rally's at the capitol, etc. As Meteor Blades pointed out this won't happen over night and is a long term strategy but I think if we all take the lead in our respective states we can make this dream happen sooner than DK leadership expects.
