Pew Research has just published a poll on opinions about the Senate Intelligence Committee's report on torture. It is depressing but not really surprising that there is majority support for the program.
About Half See CIA Interrogation Methods as Justified
While about 50% take a position of definite support for a program that most of the rest of the world is condemning, there is a large bloc of people who say they don't know. That probably translates to indifference in many cases. Only 29% of the American public is prepared to take a clear moral stand.
This has been the pattern since the day the planes flew into the WTC. Americans have been willing to agree to anything when the whiff of terrorism was waved under their noses. This is not just right wing Republicans. It is entirely plausible that another pied piper could lead the country down a similar path using the same propaganda. American exceptionalism really means being exceptionally gullible.
