In the early to mid-'60s I lived in Arkansas. At that time the wonderful daily newspaper "The Arkansas Gazette--"the oldest daily west of the Mississippi" was still publishing. This is an account of a news item from that time.
At a church in Little Rock children were rehearsing their Christmas play. "Mary and Joseph" knocked at the door of the inn. The boy playing Joseph spoke to the inn-keeper saying, "My wife is so tired--may we stay at your inn?"
The little boy playing the inn-keeper, hesitated, and then replied, "Yes. Come on in."
The adult Sunday School teacher, intervened, explaining to the "inn-keeper" that he needed to turn away Mary and Joseph, so that the baby Jesus could be born in a manger.
The boy playing the inn-keeper struggled with this instruction, but wanted to do the right thing.
At the next try, "Joseph" asked, "My wife is so tired--may we stay at your inn?"
The inn-keeper hesitated a moment and then replied, "There is no room at the inn. But come on in and have a drink anyway."
What a good kid. You know his parents were hospitable.
