Today's Coffee Hour is brought to you by Scotoma. I was first exposed to this concept in a class on how to teach. Our instructor used the term to help teach us that sometimes students just are unable to "see" or "get" new ideas. In other words they have a blind spot. My instructor encouraged us to be on the look out for this and to be creative in presenting our lessons. Here is an example that illustrates this. Most all children instinctively relate letters to words using the visual system without any effort. But, what about a child that doesn't get it? In one case it was found that using shaving cream as a tablet and the finger as a pen the child was able to learn letters and words. This was done by over coming the visual blind spot and using the "touch" and "feeling" senses of the hand. Best, JON
